On this blog post, I mentioned that I was a big believer in the success leaves clues principle. A few of you asked me to talk more about that, and I am happy to do it.

The idea comes from Jack Canfield’s awesome book The Success Principles, and the premise is simple yet powerful:

“One of the great things about living in today’s world of abundance and opportunity is that almost everything you want to do has already been done by someone else,” says Canfield. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s losing weight, running a marathon, starting a business, becoming financially independent, triumphing over breast cancer, or hosting the perfect dinner party—someone has already done it and left clues in the form of books, manuals, audio and video programs, university classes, online courses, seminars and workshops.”

For virtually anything you want to do, there are plenty of books, courses, and many other resources on how to do it at your disposal. (Canfield put together this comprehensive list about books and audio programs on a variety of topics). There are also mentors, teachers, advisors, counselors, coaches, consultants and a host of other professionals and subject-matter experts who can lend a hand.

Canfield offers three ways to begin to seek out success clues in the area in which you are interested:

  1. Seek out a teacher, coach, mentor; a manual, book, audio program, or an Internet resource to help you achieve one of your major goals.
  2. Seek out someone who has already done what you want to do, and ask the person if you can interview him or her on how you should proceed.
  3. Ask someone if you can shadow them for a day and watch them work. Or offer to be a volunteer, assistant, or intern for someone you can learn from.

Canfield recalls a time when he was in conversation with a makeup artist whose dream was to open up a beauty salon. He suggested putting into practice No. 2 above: to take out a salon owner to lunch and ask how she had opened her own salon. To Canfield’s surprise, the makeup artist exclaimed, “You can do that?”

The answer is YES, by all means, you can certainly do that. 🙂 Yet I bet that at this point you are rejecting the idea with thoughts such as, Why would someone take the time to tell me what they did? Why would they teach me and create their own competition? To which Canfield responds, “Banish those thoughts. You will find that most people love to talk about how they built their business or accomplished their goals.”

And if you ask and the answer is no, don’t take it personally. No may simply mean that it’s a busy time and they may be willing to do it in the future. Ask and find out if you may contact them again at a better time. If not, simply move on and ask someone else.

A great exercise to overcome our fear and hesitation to do this to turn the experience around: imagine that someone who is looking at accomplishing what you have done comes to ask for your help. I’m sure you’d feel flattered and would at least accept a 10-15 minute call, if not a nice lunch, or a tour of your business or facility, right? It’s exactly the same the other way around. There’s plenty of goodwill, you just have to look for the clues and ask.

ACTION

TODAY: Start gathering success clues about what you’d like to do. Get a book, watch a video, listen to an audio program, or get a hold of some helpful resource. Also, make a list of people with whom you’d like to connect and ask for information. Reach out to them.

FUTURE: Adopt this success leaves clues principle as part of your repertoire of resources. You will never be at a loss for helpful information or guidance ever again knowing that you can always learn and follow in the footsteps of someone who has done what you want to accomplish.

Steven Pressfield, renowned author, has written much about Resistance as part of our work (The War of Art, Turning Pro, Do The Work). Resistance is that chatter inside our head that criticizes all we do, prevents us from starting or continuing a project, and wants to sabotage its completion.

However, in Do The Work, Pressfield says, “The opposite of Resistance is Assistance.” The Assistance, whatever form this takes, stands for the love for your dream, your creation, or whatever it is that you are looking to bring to fruition: “The dream is your project, your vision, your symphony, your startup. The love is the passion and enthusiasm that fill your heart when you envision your project’s completion.”

“In myths and legends, the knight is always aided in his quest to slay the dragon. Providence brings forth a champion whose role is to assist the hero. Theseus had Ariadne when he fought the Minotaur. Jason had Medea when he went after the Golden Fleece. Odysseus had the goddess Athena to guide him home. In Native American myths, our totemic ally is often an animal—a magic raven, say, or a talking coyote. In Norse myths, an old crone sometimes assists the hero; in African legends, it’s often a bird. The Three Wise Men were guided by a star. All of these characters or forces represent Assistance.”

Pressfield details how, when Resistance appears (which, in his words, is all the time), he thinks of Charles Lindbergh:

What symphony or Resistance must have been playing in his head when he was struggling to raise the funding for his attempt to fly across the Atlantic solo?
“You’re too young, you’re too inexperienced; you’ve got no credentials, no credibility. Everyone who’s tried this has failed and you will, too. It can’t be done. Your plane will crash, you’re going to drown, you’re a madman who is attempting the impossible and you deserve whatever dire fate befalls you!”

“What saw Lindy through?” asks Pressfield. “It can only have been the dream,” he answers himself. “Love of the idea.”

It is that love of the idea, the visualization of our goal, along with dogged determination, that gets us through the finish line. Pressfield points out that it is in our best interest to keep our end in mind so that “we can align ourselves with these universal forces of Assistance—this dream, this passion to make the unmanifest manifest—and ride them into battle against the dragon.”

After all, Pressfield goes on, “How cool would it be, in 1927, to land at Le Bourget field outside Paris, having flown from New York, solo and non-stop, before anyone else had ever done it?”

Keep your end in mind. Always. And keep working at it. But as you work on it, don’t get so mired in the details that you lose sight of your desired goal. Focus on Assistance, not on Resistance.

Today’s idea expands on yesterday’s AEIOU method (to bring clarity and figure out what you want when you don’t know). However, instead of sharing a methodology, this time my intention is to share a mind-shift.

When we don’t know what we want, we focus on the lack. We beat ourselves up because we think we are supposed to know what we want, or because we should have figured it out by now, or because _______ (fill in the blank with what you tell yourself).

In A Year Without Fear, Tama Kieves says, “When you don’t have a definition or plan, this isn’t a lack. It’s an opening. You don’t have a label, but you do have a ticket. You have a ticket to go anywhere you want to go. You have a blank canvas. You can say yes to any desire, sunbeam, divine invitation that comes your way. Something will come. You are in the exact right place where magic can find you.”

So there you have it. Don’t focus on the lack. Focus on your ticket to anywhere: a wonderful opportunity ahead that you can turn into whatever you want. Give yourself permission to explore various paths to determine which one you fully want to go through.

The Law of Creativity states that “Every advance in human life begins with an idea in the mind of a single person.”

“Ideas are the key to the future,” says author Brian Tracy in The 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success. “It is the ideas you generate, more than anything else, that will enable you to solve your problems, overcome your obstacles, and achieve your goals.”

Take a look around you: your clothing, the furniture, the appliances, the products and services that you use… every single one of those things was an idea in somebody’s mind before becoming a reality. And the beauty of this law is that it doesn’t stop there. Tracy adds four corollaries to this Law that make it so much better, stronger, and much more powerful:

1st corollary: Your ability to generate constructive ideas is, to all intents and purposes, unlimited. Therefore your potential is unlimited as well. Tracy explains this beautifully: “Ideas are a mode of transportation, a vehicle that you can use to take yourself from wherever you are to wherever you want to go. Your job is to generate as many ideas as possible, evaluate them carefully against your current goals, and then take action on them.” Two things to remember here: (1) there is no such thing as a shortage of ideas and, (2) as Seth Godin says, “you can’t have good ideas unless you’re willing to generate a lot of bad ones.”

2nd corollary: Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. –Napoleon Hill.Your mind is designed in such a way that you cannot have an idea on the one hand without also having the ability to bring that idea into reality on the other. […] The only question you have to answer is, how badly do you want it?”

3rd corollary: Imagination rules the world. – Napoleon Bonaparte. “Our entire man-made world is the result of thought brought into reality.” As Bill Burnett and Dave Evans so aptly put it in their book Designing Your Life, “Everything that surrounds us was designed by someone. And every design started with a problem.” And before there was design, there was the idea of that design in the person’s mind; it was the idea of how to solve a problem or how to make something better. A lot of things come to fruition because someone wants to scratch his/her own itch and the solution is successful enough to be shared.

4th corollary: Imagination is more important than facts. – Albert Einstein. “An idea or an insight at a critical moment can be the turning point in your life. All great changes in human life and destiny begin with an idea that enables you to see things differently and to take an action that you would not have taken in the absence of that idea.”

ACTION

TODAY: Tracy suggests practicing the “Mindstorming” method of idea generation for any and all problems. Here’s how it works:

  1. At the top of a sheet of paper, write down any goal or problem you have in the form of a question. Then, write 20 answers to the question. Your answers must be in the present tense as if you are doing them already.
  2. Pick at least one idea or answer from your list of 20, and take action on it immediately. This will ensure the creativity and ideas keep flowing all day long and, the more ideas have, the greater the opportunity to find the one(s) that work best to solve your problem or attain your goal.

FUTURE: “Do this mindstorming exercise every day for a week, first thing in the morning, for whatever question or goal is most important to you at the moment,” says Tracy. “You will be amazed at the quantity and quality of ideas that spring from your imagination when you ask yourself the right questions and then write down the answers.”

Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton, in their book The Best Team Wins, provide a toolkit of 101 ideas to inspire teams. The ideas are short and sweet, some are powerful, some are practical, and some others are plain fun!

I will showcase in here, every so often, those ideas that I like the most. I’ll do this one at a time to keep up with the promise of every post readable in less than 5 minutes. (Here’s a previous post from this book too.)

The idea that I want to highlight today is the one Gostick and Elton call, “Adopt an afternoon lift.” It’s an example of teambuilding they saw at Microsoft. I like it because it doesn’t matter whether you work at a Fortune 500 or as a solopreneur, you can definitely apply it.

“Each day, one person signed up to blast a song across the work area at three o’clock. Everyone was dragging by that point and needed a lift. Some people got up and danced, and everyone clapped when the song was done. Classics Mustang Sally, Born to Be Wild, and Living on a Prayer were a few popular choices.”

The authors mention that a strong sense of camaraderie within the team needs to be present before this can happen. “It was clear to us that solid relationships were in place before this kind of fun could be accepted an authentic.” And I would add that doing this exercise on a daily basis likely continued to foster the strength of those existing bonds throughout the team.

This idea, however, is not exclusive to large corporations. I’ve started to do it on a daily basis when I need an afternoon pickup, and it works out well. Whether you have a team and blast the song out loud, or you just get up and walk briskly (dance?) with your headphones on while the song lasts, it’s a perfect energy and mood lift for the afternoon slump.

ACTION

TODAY: Gostick and Elton suggest “Figure out a daily ritual that [you or] your team can adopt to restore energy levels later in the day.”

FUTURE: Adopt that afternoon pick-me-up ritual for a while to see how it goes. Don’t be afraid to modify it to suit your needs. It’s a much welcome break and it’s a fun way to restore your energy when you most need it.

7 Steps to making a Mind Map

In psychology, there are two things that the brain needs in order for learning to take place: association and imagination. But this is nothing new according to Tony Buzan, author of over 100 books on learning and education. Centuries ago the Greeks devised helpful memory systems—based on association and imagination as well—that enabled them to recall hundreds, and even thousands, of facts.

And studying the Greeks, Leonardo Da Vinci, and other creatives, is exactly how Buzan came up with the idea of Mind Maps:  a graphical representation of information—using imagination and association—to capture ideas and projects in a way that can be easily recalled, understood and explained.

“A Mind Map is the ultimate organizational thinking tool. [It’s] the easiest way to put information into your brain and to take information out of your brain—it’s a creative and effective means of note-taking that literally ‘maps out’ your thoughts.”

All Mind Maps begin at the center (of the page, the screen, etc.) and, from there, branches radiate out. Mind Maps are colorful, and filled with lines, symbols, words and images that help our brains organize information. Buzan says, “With a Mind Map, a long list of boring information can be turned into a colorful, memorable, highly organized diagram that works in line with your brain’s natural way of doing things.” If you’ve never seen a Mind Map, here’s a gallery of them in Buzan’s page, and here are the results of a Google search, so that you can see that you’re only limited by your imagination. Since Wimbledon just finished yesterday, here’s a Mind Map about Tennis.

So, what do we need to create a Mind Map? Very simple: blank paper, colored pens and pencils, and your imagination. In a pinch, any pen or pencil will do, I’ve done them on them on the back of a napkin with black eyeliner… Alternatively, I also use MindMeister, an online program (free and paid options) and there are many other online/offline apps and software options that you can use. The author’s own program is called iMindMap, but I must confess I’ve never used that one.

Mind Maps will help you to “be more creative, save time, solve problems, concentrate, organize and clarify your thinking, pass exams with good grades, remember better, study faster and more efficiently, make studying a breeze, see the ‘whole picture,’ plan, communicate,” and much more!

Buzan shares seven steps to making a Mind Map. I’m including them here verbatim and with the exact same format/emphasis for you. Since Buzan is from England, you will also notice the British spelling of some words (how fun!), so I’ve left them intact as that’s how they appear in the book.

1. Start in the CENTRE of a blank page turned sideways. Why? Because starting in the centre gives your Brain freedom to spread out in all directions and to express itself more freely and naturally.

2. Use an IMAGE or PICTURE for your central idea. Why? Because an image is worth a thousand words and helps you use your Imagination. A central image is more interesting, keeps you focused, helps you concentrate, and gives your Brain more of a buzz!

3. Use COLOURS throughout. Why? Because colours are as exciting to your Brain as are images. Colour adds extra vibrancy and life to your Mind Map, adds tremendous energy to your Creative Thinking, and is fun!

4. CONNECT your MAIN BRANCHES to the central image and connect your second- and third-level branches to the first and second levels, etc. Why? Because your Brain works by association. It likes to link two (or three, or four) things together. If you connect the branches, you will understand and remember a lot more easily.

5. Make your branches CURVED rather than straight-lined. Why? Because having nothing but straight lines is boring to your Brain.

6. Use ONE KEY WORD PER LINE. Why? Because single key words give your Mind Map more power and flexibility.

7. Use IMAGES throughout. Why? Because each image, like the central image, is also worth a thousand words. So if you have only 10 images in your Mind Map, it’s already the equal of 10,000 words of notes!

TODAY: Think of a project or an idea with which you need to deal. Capture it on paper by doing a mind map. Enjoy the process and the ideas, clarity and new angles that will come to you by doing this exercise.

FUTURE: Keep mind mapping as a handy tool when you need to manage information or turn the complex into simple-to-see and understand. I’ve used mind mapping for many years now and the clarity and organization they bring to my jumbled thoughts always helps me figure out the structure of my projects better.
